What to know
The fuse board (consumer unit) protects every circuit in the house. Older boards with rewireable fuses, or boards with no RCD protection, don't give the protection that modern wiring rules call for.
An RCD switches off the power in a fraction of a second if current leaks to earth, for example through a person touching a faulty appliance. It's one of the most important safety devices in a home.
A board upgrade is also a good time to label every circuit clearly, so you know which switch does what when something trips.
