What to know
If the power is off across your road as well, it's a supply fault, not your wiring. ESB Networks shows known outages on its PowerCheck service, and that's who to contact.
If only your house or one circuit is off, look at the fuse board. A tripped switch (an MCB or RCD) that keeps going back off as soon as you reset it is telling you something is wrong: often one faulty appliance, sometimes water getting into an outside light or socket, sometimes a damaged cable.
Unplugging appliances on that circuit and resetting the switch can show whether one appliance is the cause. If it still trips with everything unplugged, the fault is in the wiring and needs an electrician.
A burning smell, scorch marks on a socket or switch, or a buzzing sound from the fuse board are reasons to switch off at the main switch and leave it off until an electrician has checked it.
